DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS:

May I ask you a question?

DQ#1: Have you come to the place in your spiritual life that if you were to die today you know for certain that you have eternal life, or is that something you'd say you're still working on?

1 John 5:13
"I have written this.... so that you may know you have eternal life."

***May I share with you how I came to know for certain that I have eternal life and how you may know also?

***Before I share with you, let me ask you another question.

DQ#2: Suppose you were to die today and stand before God and He asks you, "Why should I let you into my heaven?" what would you say?

***Repeat and confirm answer.

Transition: When you answered that first question I thought I had some really good news for you. But after hearing your answer to the second question, I know I have the greatest news you have ever heard.

II. GOSPEL PRESENTATION

1. GRACE

-Heaven is a free gift

Romans 6:23
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. "

*** Eternal life, like any genuine gift is free. It must be received freely.

*** No amount of personal effort, good work or religious deeds can earn a place in heaven for you because eternal life, like any genuine gift, is free.

*** Friend's gift example.

-It is not earned or deserved

Ephesians 2:8-9
"For it is by grace you have been saved through faith - it is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast."

Transition: This can be seen more clearly when we understand what the Bible says about man.

2. MAN

-Is a sinner

Romans 3:23
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

*** Sin is anything that is not pleasing to God or trespassing His laws.

*** 3 sins a day example.

-Cannot save himself

Matthew 5:48
"Be perfect therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Still we might say, "I'm not all bad. I'm mostly good at least better than that other guy..."

*** Omelet with bad egg

*** Do you see why it's impossible for anyone to get into heaven by their own good works?

Transition: This comes into sharper focus when we look at what the Bible says about God.

3. GOD

God is merciful therefore does not want to punish us

1 John 4:8
"God is love."

God is just therefore must punish sin.

Exodus 34:7
"Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished."

Transition: God solved this problem in the Person of Jesus Christ

4. CHRIST

-Who He is: He is the infinite God-Man

John 1:1,14
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
"The Word became flesh, and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, Who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. "

-What He did:
He died on the cross and rose from the dead to pay the penalty for our sins and to purchase a place in heaven for us.

*** Record book of sin

Isaiah 53:6
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Transition: This gift is received by faith.

5. FAITH

*** Key to Heaven; illustration of the keys. There is only one key that opens the door to heaven. But before I say what that is, let me describe 2 keys that we often think would open the door to heaven but would not.

-What it is not:

It's not mere head knowledge;

James 2:19
"You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder."

It's not mere temporal faith
- faith in God to give you safe travel or when you are sick - all temporary.

-What it is:
It is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life

Acts 16:31
"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved."

To believe means to TRUST.

*** Chair example - transfer trust from what I am doing to what Jesus has done.

*** Beggar's Hand and Gratitude - Faith is the hand of a beggar reaching out to accept the gift of a King. Years ago, this beggar reached out an unworthy hand and received the gift of eternal life. I didn't deserve it then, I don't deserve it now. But I have it - by grace!

The motive for Christian living is gratitude for the gift of eternal life.

III. COMMITMENT QUESTION:

Does this make sense to you?

This is the greatest story ever told, about the greatest person who ever lived, offering the greatest git that could ever be offered. So the greatest question that could ever be asked is...

Would you like to receive the gift of eternal life?

CLARIFICATION OF COMMITMENT:

Let me clarify what this involves:
(*ask prospect each time if this is what they want to do)

- Transfer trust *
- Receive the resurrected and living Christ as Savior *

We need a savior because we are sinners and cannot save ourselves.

Revelation 3:20
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

- Receive Christ as Lord *
- Repent *

If this is what you really want, I can lead us in prayer and we can tell God what you just now told me.

Pray for them- that God would give them faith and repentance.

Pray with them- in short phrases of the GOSPEL Outline allowing them to repeat after you

Pray for them- the the Holy Spirit will grant them assurance.

I would like you to read something Jesus says about what you have just done.

John 6:47
I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.
